May 22, 2008: Two Crystalline Thumbs Up!

Though I still hate the experience of going to movies with the mouth-breathing troglodytes who now wallow barefoot and sweaty in our theaters as though they're in their trailer living rooms, I'll still swallow my disdain for something special.

Good thing Indiana Jones 4 justified that today!

It had everything I needed in a movie: just enough magic, weirdness, mystery, and adventure (but not too much, not the tedious battles and set pieces of the Star Wars prequels!) plus Indiana Jones facing it all with his great world-weary patience and intellect.

(It probably helps that Indy is a childhood hero, that I too have striven to recklessly spend all my life's energy on weird mystery while spurning as much else as possible.)

Almost everything in it was excellent. It is easily the second-best Indy movie, if not--gasp!--the first. Though you'd need to see Raiders to make this one as worth it, so I guess it's automatically second.

My standard of writing is this: if you can pull a fast one, telling a story with such flamboyant verve and coolness that I don't notice or care about the flaws, you win.

Indy 4 wins.

Go see it.

Wow! Was it really that good? OK, I'll check it out...

Just returned from catching Indy 4. A little over the top for my taste, but it was easily better than the 2nd and 3rd flicks in the series. I give it a solid B.
