March 13, 2008: Visiting the Asylum

Back in 2006 (long ago now that the statute of limitations on trespassing has passed), Matt Warner and I explored an abandoned children's asylum in his hometown of Staunton, Virginia.

Formerly a place for treating autistic and behaviorally challenged children, the DeJarnette Center has long since fallen into ruin. Though we only went to take some exterior photos, an open window activated my compulsive curiosity and we had to look inside.

Here is my gallery of photos from our visit, recently enhanced for better viewing.

I'd like to point out that we were responsible trespassers: we were sad to see the place in such a shape, and we left everything the way we found it. We weren't the first visitors to be sure, but we were certainly the least offensive.

No, I won't tell you how to break in.

Man! Those look creepy and awesome!

Wow! Some of those pics looks like scenes right out of an episode of Ghost Hunters. Very nice.
